Setting up your server on ocelot.aul.fiu.edu

Creating directories and changing permissions

• Log onto ocelot.aul.fiu.edu
• Allow everyone to access your root directory.
  chmod  701  ~
• If you don't already have a cgs4854 directory, then create one
  mkdir ~/cgs4854
• Set the permissions on cgs4854 to 705
  chmod 705 ~/cgs4854
• Create server root, document root, and group access directories in the cgs4854 directory
  cd ~/cgs4854
mkdir  serverRoot
mkdir  docRoot
• Set permissions on these directories.
  chmod  705  serverRoot  
chmod  705  docRoot
• Change to the serverRoot directory and create the conf, and logs directories
  cd  ~/cgs4854/serverRoot
mkdir  conf
mkdir  logs
• Change the permissions to restrict access
  chmod  705  conf logs
• Copy the configuration files to your directory from my directory
  cp  ~downeyt/public/conf/*  ~/cgs4854/serverRoot/conf

Editing the configuration files

• Change to the cgs4854/serverRoot/conf directory
  cd ~/cgs4854/serverRoot/conf
• Edit the httpd.conf file
  nano -w httpd.conf
• Make the following changes to the httpd.conf file
  • You must change the location of the lock file to /tmp/your-account-name.lock (for example /tmp/dlette07.lock)
    LockFile /tmp/dlette07.lock
  • Request a port number using this script: Requesting a Port
  • Use the port you just requested to set the port for your server (for example 65432)
    Listen 65432
  • Change the server root to your server directory (for example /aul/homes/dlette07/cgs4854/serverRoot)
    ServerRoot  /aul/homes/dlette07/cgs4854/serverRoot
  • Change the ServerAdmin to your e-mail address
    ServerAdmin dlette07@fiu.edu
  • Change the ServerName to your student host: replace XX with your host number
    ServerName studentXX.cgs4854.cs.fiu.edu
    
• Edit the srm.conf file
  nano -w srm.conf
• Make the following changes to the srm.conf file
  • Change the document root to your directory (for example /aul/homes/dlette07/cgs4854/docRoot)
    DocumentRoot /aul/homes/dlette07/cgs4854/docRoot
• Edit the access.conf file
  nano -w access.conf
• Make the following changes to access.conf
  • Change the <Directory> tag for your document root (for example /aul/homes/dlette07/cgs4854/docRoot)
    Look for the one that has your-user-name in it
    <Directory /aul/homes/dlette07/cgs4854/docRoot>

Creating default web pages

• Create an index.html file in the cgs4854/docRoot directory. This is the page that visitors will see when they access the / URL from your server.
